5 Ways to have a good relationship with colleagues

Do you know how to have a good relationship with colleagues and co-workers? It is no secret that a pleasant workplace environment helps boost productivity.

If you would like an idea on how to improve productivity in an organization, endeavour to accommodate others.

Try getting close to your colleagues and make a great relationship with them.

Part of the reason is co-workers sometimes seem to compete with each other. This leads to many negative emotions like jealousy, anger, and unhappiness.

Modern life is full of demands and stresses and in this frantic world, it is easy to get overwhelmed.

You may forget that you aren’t the only person who has to deal with any particular problem.

I have been in various kinds of professional relationships myself, including working with freelancers, colleagues at work, interns, and volunteers.

I have realized that there is an art to getting along well with your colleagues naturally.

It involves being polite, friendly, and mutually helpful, but there is more to it than just that.

Here are 7 proven techniques I use myself to make sure that I have a good relationship with every colleague now and in the future.

You should be aware of these techniques to have a successful and healthy relationship with your colleagues.

1. Be open and honest

One of the best ways to have a good relationship with your colleagues is to be open and honest about your values, goals, and priorities.

This will help you find common ground with them, essential for forming a strong team culture.

With this, you can learn how to motivate your team to improve performance without difficulty, because you have a good relationship.

You can also use this approach as a way of sharing ideas and building relationships that go beyond the workplace.

Meanwhile, we all make mistakes and we are all human. So, if you make a mistake, just own it.

Don’t pretend that you didn’t mean to do something or say something, or that it wasn’t your fault.

Help others see that you are not perfect and that there is room for improvement for instance if you see something wrong in the workplace or office culture that needs addressing, don’t wait for someone else to point it out. Speak up!

You might be surprised at how many people will want to help make things better with you so ask.

2. Don’t be afraid to ask for help

It can be tempting to wait until you are in trouble before asking for help, but it is important to remember that when you need it, your colleagues will be there.

Part of being a good colleague is being able to ask for help when you need it so, don’t hesitate to ask for help when you need it or want it, even if the other person does not want to give it to you (they may be saving it for later).

It is better than feeling like you are alone in this situation and having no one around who understands what you are going through.

It is not selfish or lazy to ask for help. Asking for help is a sign of strength and professionalism.

3. Listen to what they have to say

This is a basic and important skill that everyone should learn when dealing with people including colleagues.

It is easy to get distracted by the urgent, but listening to others is one of the most effective ways to ensure your success.

A good listener will be able to offer feedback and suggestions on how things can be improved while remaining open-minded and curious about other people’s perspectives.

You are not just a hard worker; you are also someone who cares about other people. You want them to feel comfortable talking to you, so listen carefully when they do talk.

Don’t interrupt and don’t be afraid to ask questions—it will make them feel more comfortable talking about their day and may even inspire them to share something new with you that might help your job more efficiently, too.

When you are in a position of leadership, it is easy to get wrapped up in your work and forget about the people around you.

But the best managers know how to be more effective as a leader and the most important part of their job is making sure everyone else does good work.

It is even more important when you are in charge because it means you will have to spend time explaining yourself and your decisions when things go wrong.

4. Give them credit when they do good work

It is not always easy to recognize your colleagues’ accomplishments, especially if they are not high profile or visible in meetings or meetings agendas.

But by giving credit where it is due, you will make it easier for them to continue working hard on their projects and initiatives — which will ultimately benefit all of you in the long run!

There are common team problems and solutions you can use when you have issues with your colleagues or a group task.

As a manager, it shows that you trust your employees and value them as much as you do yourself and it makes everyone feel valued and appreciated — which is great for morale and productivity.

Meanwhile, you may not always know exactly what is going on in the office—and honestly, neither do most people—but if someone does something great like finding a solution or running interference for another employee or partner, let them know how much it means to you!

Saying thank you goes a long way toward building positive relationships at work and shows others that you appreciate their efforts on behalf of everyone else in the organization.

5. Be proactive (and follow up)

It is easy to take things for granted when you are focused on your career trajectory and personal goals — but if you want your colleagues to stay engaged with the team, taking initiative can go a long way toward maintaining productive relationships between groups of employees (and even departments).

Being proactive is one of the best ways to build a good relationship with your colleagues.

This means being willing to ask them questions, offer suggestions, and even do some of your work if they are not able to do it themselves.

If they have something they need help with, don’t be afraid to give them a hand and make it easy.

6. Add value to people

After selecting someone of value, kindly note that you too would be expected to add value to them continuously or else the friendship can be severed in the future.

Like I would always say “Success is the ability to be part of the success story of people in your life. You cannot truly be said to be a success until people whose path has crossed yours can identify you as contributing factor to their success.”

According to the convener of the renowned event, ‘the platform’, Poju Oyemade, ‘The most important things are the relationships in your life and the investments you make into people.’

Do you know that the world has shifted its focus from physical capital development to human capital development?

When you invest in people, the returns are limitless! Human capital development is important because it increases productivity and thus profitability.

Therefore, the more you invest in people, the more productive and profitable those individuals will be to you.

One of the characteristics of successful entrepreneurs is helping those around them grow into better versions of themselves.

If you build those around you, when you are down, you’ll have people who will be able to lift you.

However, you will not find it nice if you are the only valuable person because no one will be useful.

After you acquire people of value, ensure that they grow to be more valuable day by day.

7. Be open to socialization

Research suggests that having healthy social relationships makes a bigger impact on avoiding early death than taking blood pressure medication.

One study even suggests that a lack of social relationships has similar effects as smoking 15 cigarettes a day.

Your colleagues must not be your friends, but you can try to create a good relationship with them.

This is the reason why relationships are important in business. They make everything better and give your workplace a happy aura.

Conclusion

It is easy to get caught up in everyday activities, and it can be hard to maintain good relationships too.

Good relationships start at the top of a company, so being open and honest with everyone is important.

Be a good communicator by being upfront about problems and issues that need to be addressed.

Know that by doing this, you can also help them understand what you want to acquire from them.

There are many ways to have a good relationship with your colleagues, but I shared some for you to remember.

So, we have come to the end of this exciting topic, do let me know your thoughts in the comment.
