Working on a farm is unlike anything you have ever done before. If you can get it right and have a smoothly run operation, then you could find yourself in a wonderful position professionally and financially.

Are you in a position where you’re hoping to purchase some land and get your own little agricultural business moving?

Good for you. As I said, it takes a great work ethic, but it’s rewarding at the same time. Here are a few things you’ll need to do if you, as a good farmer, want to get the farming business spot-on:

1. You’ll Need Some Discipline

The job is by no means a walk in the park. Most of the time, you’re going to be up at pretty early hours, so you’ll need to have that mental toughness and discipline to get you up, out, and working.

You’ll be working in some pretty difficult conditions and some point in the year, so you’ll have to be ready for when those elements hit you, too.

It’s easy to slack off when the going gets tough. Having the wherewithal to push forward during the more pressing times will land you in a much better spot, though.

2. Plan A Routine

This kind of job is pretty gruelling and requires you to get things done before you can even think about quitting for the day. You’re not paid by the hour; you’re paid by your output.

Your day finishes when the work is done, so you’re going to need to have everything in order on your side. One of the best ways to get things in order is by having a systematic routine. This will help you to be productive.

Having an evening routine will allow you to get to sleep at the right time. Having a morning routine when you wake will then set you up for the entire day again.

If your mornings are spent doing whatever you feel like, then you’re probably going to be inconsistent in terms of the work you put in each day.

3. You’ll Need To Be Physically Able

It’s a pretty physical job. Working on a farm means you’ll be on your feet all day taking care of all kinds of tasks.

There will be a fair bit of heavy lifting, and you’ll probably be drudging through lots of different terrains in all kinds of conditions.

In terms of the job itself, it’s refreshing to get outside and stay outside all day, but it comes with a lot of work along the way. Now, that kind of thing takes a lot of effort, stamina, and strength.

You can obviously build it over a fairly short period of time but it’s good to be prepared beforehand.

4. Have A Firm Business Plan

While the agricultural side is a little different from your typical and traditional companies, it’s still a genuine business and needs to be treated as such. If you want to become a successful farmer, you need to have a solid business plan.

In actual fact, you need to have a solid business plan if you want to get the wheels spinning and off the ground.

The plan needs to include details about every single facet of the prospective business. It’s not something that will take a few hours to complete; it’s something that will need to be worked on for quite a while.

You don’t just figure everything out in a matter of days. A lot of research and learning will need to take place before you set anything up. Your plan is going to be your bible in a way. You’ll follow along with it throughout every step and stage of the business’s life.

You’ll also need a plan in order to convince companies and individuals alike to invest in your project. If you head into, say, a bank with very little preparation in terms of a plan and a presentation, then you’re not going to have much joy 😐 .

An airtight and convincing plan could sway someone into injecting capital into your business. It could be the difference between a modest yield and prosperity.

5. You Need The Right Supplies

If you don’t have the best equipment and machinery for the job, then you might struggle to get complete the work you have – and if you do, then it will probably take a lot longer.

A farm needs a few vehicles to operate smoothly – make sure you have everything purchased and ready for use. You don’t want to be without the big guns.

If you’re harbouring all kinds of livestock, then you’re going to want to use the best possible feed with the healthiest nutrients.

If you’re thinking about turning the farmhouse into a B&B, then you’re going to need to stock up on everything in that a guest will need in order to have a great stay. You can only go for so long without good equipment before you start to really struggle.

6. Recruit A Good Group Of People

To be a successful farmer, you can’t do a job like this all on your own. You could give it a go, but you’ll only get so far.

Having a good group of workers alongside you will ensure that the days are a lot easier. When you’re on a farm working your fingers to the bone, you need to have the support with you.

7. Look At Your Marketing Situation

You’re working every single day in this job so that you can make money and provide a wonderful living for yourself (and your family). In order to make a little more, you’re going to need to let people know about you.

There’s no point in putting in all of the hard work if you’re only catering to a small group of people. Advertise yourself and your products wherever you can.

Get on social media and seek attention the right way. Get in touch with marketing agencies and come up with all kinds of strategies.

8. Have Enough Storage Areas

You’re going to need to have a lot of space to store livestock, machinery, tools, and materials. You can’t just leave them out in the open. Make sure you have farm sheds with enough room to store all your necessities.

As you begin to build as a business, you’ll start to bring in more demand; you’ll need as much storage as you can for all of the equipment you’ll have.

I do hope that these tips help you be a better farmer and most importantly, a successful one. What do you think?

  1. You’re right about saying that farming is a genuine business that I’ll have to treat as such. With that in mind, I think I’ll need to look at some farming lots for sale if I want to invest in such a business and take it seriously. After all, I’ve always wanted to own my own farm where I’ll be keeping ducks and geese, and if I’m going to construct a dedicated pond for them, I’ll have to make sure that I can do everything in that land without having to go through any middlemen just so I can make changes to it.

    1. Wow how is the progres with rearing geese and ducks …I have a small farm with em + Guinea fowls in Gatanga Kenya. I’ve been very profitable in selling the gooselings keets + the eggs
